and just before i left..

i had one of the best thrift scores i've ever had, and that includes some miracles. at the pta thrift store behind the bojangles, where i almost did not even stop, but it was as if there was a tiny voice in my ear urging me on, despite my complete lack of need for stuff of any kind... and i indulged, fully expecting to find no-thing, especially because this particular thrift is junky and racist, or at least it used to be...

but in i walk, and look who was waiting for me..

a fricke! a wheel i don't have! and for a mere $30. it had been waiting for me since 3/8. some of you know i have quite the herd of wheels, and i'm not sure why other than my hoarder collector urges. although they are all different and unique tools ... yarns are not the same produced on different wheels. and i so enjoy tinkering with them and learning their histories. and i do use them all. this fricke is, weirdly, the only double-treadle i have at the moment, and fits well into my collection as a smaller castle-style wheel than my louet s-10, and i'm really impressed with its action.. it is *so* nice and smooth. also - and i didn't realize this at first - it came with a woolee winder, a very nifty (and expensive) upgrade. perhaps all this crazy luck is a sign that i should consider starting a spinning school, or a cottage industry.

i'm waiting for this wheel to tell me his name. i feel that he's my first boy wheel, but he's being shy. i keep thinking freddie or fergus, but i must wait for him to clarify. i brought him to my parents' place with me because i couldn't bear to leave him so soon.

i've been corresponding with katherine about the i-ching and luck and synchronicity... and not only has she been good enough to gift me a copy of the richard wilhelm translation of the i-ching, because the i-phone app is really not ok... but i think she's also sent some of her good fortune my way!

    1. first i spun some roving that my hub said looks like intestines, red with dark thrums. it was easy to get his tension right (although it was messed up when i got him, all tangled) and then get the feel for him. and tonight i just finished a skein of bunny fiber. silk is up next, for a downton kal corset!

i should have thought of you for boy's names, you have great ones!

  3. always listen to that little voice. A two treadle, your very lucky to have found one. And he is lucky to have found you! I always wonder why something ended up at a thrift store especially a spinningwheel. I have never seen them second hand. I tried one at a fair and I really loved the way it spun.

  4. This is such a great find! Congratulations! I never have much luck at thrift stores - I do quite well at my local house clearance warehouse though. Luckily it's just around the corner from my flat too!
I bet this little guy will tell you his name soon enough.

  5. dear dru, a double treadle fricke at a THRIFT STORE? i guess the Cosmos had trouble deciding where to put it so that the two of you could get together! it is humbling, isn't it? if you take it to be a sign to start a spinning school, that could be one thing, but taking it with you to your parents' house because you couldn't part with it even for a few days is showing you where your true calling is leading you. don't worry, more signs are on the way! LOL!

    1. well yes, there is even more back story here which i left out for the sake of bloggy brevity, but i know exactly where this wheel came from. i've even spun on him before!! that thickens the plot, doesn't it?! there is a small store in the same town where the woman sells wheels - she has some frickes, spinolutions, a random ashford or two. i have no idea why she donated this one, but i'm sure i tested it out at her shop. she must not know about ravelry!!!!!

now i know i'm dense, but are you saying that spinning is my true calling? it wouldn't be the first time i've thought that. and i'm glad you think the signs are coming, as i'm looking!
