a new heirloom

a yard sale find.

at first i thought it was knitted, but now i think it's crochet. anyone recognize the stitch? and then at first i thought the colourwork was intarsia, but all the designs are actually cross-stitched on top! so much work, P.S.D. i'll mend the holes, and be a good caretaker in this lifetime.

  1. Could be afghan stitch - crochet on a long hook. What a find!

  2. yes. it's definitely the afghan stitch. i have an afghan that i made in high school using the afghan stitch and embroidered over it.
and how appropriate that it has a spinning wheel. quite unusual.

  4. wherever you go you find treasures. you have a real eye. love the spinning wheels & the sunbonnetted gals with their bowers of flowers. did the seller know the story behind it?

  5. thank you all.. i'm so grateful to be part of this web of knowledge - it's amazing to get an answer about this stitch so quickly! and another friend sent me a photo of a similar crocheted blanket with cross-stitch on top, so i guess i've just never noticed this combo before.

now i'm wondering how to mend the crochet. the mending that's there is just stitched with thread.

  7. c, i can't take credit - mum has the talent for spotting these things. plus, she is relentless when it comes to junking. it was one of those sales run by a liquidator - so sadly they had no info.

    e, i'm not worthy!
